Downing Students Lead “Kids Helping Kids” Pediatric Cancer Fundraiser

Maurice W. Downing Primary School’s Student Council recently led the way in a heartfelt “Kids Helping Kids” effort to support the fight against pediatric cancer.
On Thursday, September 25, students and staff wore yellow and gold to raise awareness for pediatric cancer while collecting donations for the Mary Ruchalski Foundation.
Founded by Carol Ruchalski in honor of her daughter Mary, the foundation works to raise awareness and funding for pediatric cancer research. During her visit to MWD, Mrs. Ruchalski shared Mary’s story with students, read aloud to classes and explained the mission of the foundation.
The event was attended by Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Laura Ryder, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Maria Rianna, Principal Erik Walter, Student Council Advisors Amanda Correia and Katie Smyth, as well as MWD’s first- and second-grade student council delegates.
Through this meaningful initiative, Maurice W. Downing students demonstrated the power of compassion and community in making a difference for others.
