Malverne High School students meet with community leader, educator

Malverne High School continued its Leaders of Tomorrow Guest Speaker Series on Oct. 2, welcoming Doris Hicks-Newkirk, a founding member of the Lakeview Civic Association and a former longtime educator in the Malverne School District.
Speaking to members of the Leaders of Tomorrow program in the high school library, Ms. Hicks-Newkirk shared stories from her personal and professional journey while offering students insights into leadership, education and civic engagement.
Ms. Hicks-Newkirk reflected on her career as an educator, her years of community activism and her service to the Malverne and Lakeview communities. She also shared historical perspectives on Malverne’s connection to the desegregation of schools, helping students understand how the actions of individuals and communities can contribute to meaningful change.
During the discussion, Ms. Hicks-Newkirk invited students to share their plans for life after high school and offered words of encouragement, urging them to pursue their goals with determination, confidence and a strong commitment to whatever path they choose.
She concluded her visit by gifting each student a journal and two electronic candles — one orange and one blue. The journals offered students a place to record their thoughts, goals and reflections, while the candles carried a special message. One represented the light that burns brightly within each individual, while the other symbolized the light that each person has the ability to share with others.
The Leaders of Tomorrow Guest Speaker Series will continue throughout the school year, providing students with opportunities to learn directly from accomplished leaders in government, education and community service. Through these conversations, students are encouraged to explore their own potential as future leaders and engaged members of their communities.
