Principal's Award Recipients at MWD for being Culturally Responsive! 💙🧡

Congratulations to the MHS Leaders of Tomorrow and National Honor Society who hosted the first "Storytelling for Change" at Downing last week.
This new, student-led initiative included the opportunity for our younger students to listen to stories and create crafts with the high school scholars.
While the students were enjoying their collaboration, parents were invited to a presentation about “Books for Africa,” a non-profit organization that collects and distribute books to children and adults in throughout Africa.
It was wonderful to see such a meaningful partnership between our students and the community. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped Leaders of Tomorrow share their love of reading and raise $400 for Books for Africa.

The district wishes our Malverne community, families, friends, students and colleagues Eid Mubarak!

Happy St. Patrick's Day from Downing!!!
Our first graders engineered rainbows with Fruit Loops, marshmallows and pipe cleaners.
In second grade, students used Lucky Charms for a graphic activity.
(We even had some leprechaun sightings!!!)
Everyone was proud to show off their green and celebrate the luck of the Irish!

The MWD 1st grade Art Club, led by Mrs. Smyth, created pieces inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe in honor of Women’s History Month.

At MWD, we are proud to display our students' work and celebrate their accomplishments. February was Black History Month, March is Women's History Month, and St. Patrick's Day is approaching soon. Our bulletin boards are bursting with creativity, knowledge and passion.

At Downing, our first grade mathematicians are hard at work learning, collaborating and growing!

In Explore Class at Downing, our students are learning to be junior paleontologists and exploring the life of dinosaurs that roamed the earth over 100 million years ago!

On Mar. 7, our Downing students closed out Read Across America Week with the sweetest celebration of them all as the gym was transformed into Candy Land!
The students enjoyed visiting all the sugary sights and finding magical special guests and exciting books that they love all along the way.
What a fun way to inspire a love of literature! Thanks to our Downing team for making this a day that our students won't forget!

The Downing first grade Science Club had so much fun learning about chemical change and creating their own bouncy balls!

Read Across America Week is underway at Downing and what a sweet time our students are having!!!
Today, our students took a trip around Candy Land and landed in Licorice Lagoon and Lollypop Woods where there were special treats waiting for everyone!

During Black History Month, second graders at Downing collaborated to create bulletin boards throughout the school featuring facts about famous and influential African Americans throughout history.
To conclude this project, each class walked around to learn more about the impact made by each of this exceptional people and each student chose one person from each board to focus on and write about.
It was a wonderful way to culminate a beautiful ending to Black History Month.

As part of the monthly Portrait of a Graduate recognitions at Downing, students were honored this month for helping others and demonstrating their understanding of how to be culturally responsive.
Families were invited to the We Can and Portrait of Success Awards Ceremony to join in the celebration. We are proud to shine a light on these amazing students who are leading the way with kindness, positivity and are focused on learning about and respecting each other's differences.
Special thanks to our outstanding second grade singers who performed "Lift Every Voice and Sing" to begin each ceremony.
