On June16, the AP African Studies students from Malverne High School visited Downing to share their Juneteenth presentations and read some of their favorite books to the students. The younger students were thrilled to host these special guests at their school and many of the high school students were excited to reconnect with their elementary school roots and spend some time with their former teachers. Overall, it was an amazing opportunity for a shared experience across grade levels that offered thoughtful and engaging conversations about this historic milestone in Black history.

The district congratulates senior Isabella Thames on being selected to have artwork displayed at the prestigious “Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum” art exhibition. Isabella’s digital image, "Epiphany," was chosen by a juried panel of artists from among over 400 other Long Island student entries. Her photograph will be on display at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington through May 25. In addition, Isabella's artwork was also selected for an extended showing at Mitchells Boutique in Huntington from May 28 through June 22. On April 30, the Malverne High School Library Media Center hosted its fourth annual Poetry Slam, a celebration of the power and importance of poetry as an art form and an outlet for personal expression. This year’s poem submissions reflected the theme of National Poetry Month 2025, “This is the world I want to live in. The shared world.” Eight students took part in the competition, performing original works for the audience and panel of alumni, faculty and student judges. The event was emceed by Malverne High School Class of 2020 alumnus Stuart Oates, a staff member from Lakeview Public Library. After listening, absorbing and discussing each performance amongst themselves, the judges had the daunting task of selecting winners. After much consideration, first place was awarded to Khazeena Mahmood for her poem “Land of the Free.” Alyssa LaFaille took second place for her poem “The Invisible Ache: Endometriosis" and third place went to Kaiden Ulysse for his poem " Invasive." The district is proud to recognize each of the students and alums who shared their voices and original poems with us and grateful to our emcee and judges for their support of this exciting and inspiring event.
